I am creating this proposal to fund the beginning of a World Music Drumming ensemble for K-5th graders. These high quality instruments are a wonderful opportunity to learn rhythms and grooves they are not yet familiar with. The budget will allow for three drums which will be a start to building a larger ensemble as years pass.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 404

The three drums have very recently been added to the classroom and have given all K-5 students a chance to experience a new sound. It has been used for steady beat activities and showcasing instruments in the percussion family. Students have been taught various rhythms on each of the drums, giving them a chance to play them. They will dive further into playing these instruments, exploring new rhythms and grooves. This is the start of a classroom set for my students to use.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I am creating this proposal to fund the beginning of a World Music Drumming ensemble for K-5th graders. These high quality instruments are a wonderful opportunity to learn rhythms and grooves they are not yet familiar with. The budget will allow for three drums which will be a start to building a larger ensemble as years pass.

What will be done with my students

These drums and the World Music Drumming curriculum is an opportunity for my students to be able to express and learn in brand new ways. The curriculum teaches listening skills, understanding each part of the music, solos, various rhythms, teamwork, and much more. This is an element of my teaching I would continue to use throughout my career and students would get to use these drums from kindergarten through fifth grade. I can use these drums to introduce new subjects, review previous lessons through a new perspective, and deliver a new approach to learning with instruments.

Benefits to my students

This new ensemble of drums will bring a new way to deliver learning content to my students. I intend to use these drums to teach rhythms, grooves, and songs for them to learn and express themselves with. Naples Park Elementary has been around for 50 years but has never been able to do anything with drums like this before. It would be a new experience for every student at the school.
World Music Drumming will create a learning environment that encourages students to create, explore, and have fun while doing it. It explores music of many cultures such as Afro-Cuban, Latin, and West African. Students will be exposed to new rhythm patterns which will increase their musical literacy and playing skills. This program will only continue to grow if it starts here.

Budget Narrative

This budget will allow me to buy 3 Tubano drums. This includes a 10", 12", and 14" drum to get the ensemble started. I am choosing the set because as a bundle it costs less than individual drum purchases. I have played on these instruments before, they are built to last and sound terrific. There will also be no shipping fee.
