Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 200

My third grade students have been overjoyed with learning the recorder and being able to have a recorder of their own to keep and bring home to practice! We test for Recorder Karate "belts" weekly, and it is a huge deal when a student earns a belt in music class! We all cheer and applaud at the end of each class as the student comes up to the front of the class to be presented with their "belt," which then gets tied onto their recorder as a badge of honor.

Some students can get frustrated and there are sometimes tears of defeat when students are told they need more practice, but it is always worth it when they come back the next week, having nailed their rendition of "Merrily We Roll Along." It is an amazing tool for note reading and music literacy that engages all students and keeps them coming back for more! I couldn't be more thrilled with the outcome!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to have the 3rd grade children at Estates Elementary be afforded the opportunity to have their own instrument and be able to experience not only the joy that comes with that, but the incredible opportunity to learn music literacy through playing an instrument in a fun and dynamic way with the Recorder Karate program!

What will be done with my students

1. Students will each receive a high quality recorder to play at school and practice at home. It will come with a case and they will learn how to properly care for their recorder.
2. Over the school year, students will learn how to read music (music literacy) with note names, rhythm, treble clef, etc. as well as the basics of playing the recorder (proper fingering, breath control and posture) through a series of performance tests known as "Recorder Karate." Students are 100% engaged in this program and absolutely LOVE it!
3. Students will practice at home and at school and get guidance and support from both me and their peers.
4. Students earn "belts" as they pass each test (much like the sport of karate) and we celebrate each student as they make progress throughout the year!

Benefits to my students

The benefits of music literacy are similar to that of being able to speak another language. This is a great introduction to students on playing an instrument and being able to read music! Students at this age are so excited to play an instrument and the Recorder Karate program is such a fun, dynamic way for them to learn! Students literally "beg" me to test them for a belt and get so excited for each other, cheering their classmates on, as they are presented with their brightly colored belts at the end of class! Many students continue playing, even in 4th grade, and it encourages them to try more difficult instruments and to continue to join a music program when they get to middle school and beyond.

Budget Narrative

With smooth mellow sounds, more difficult low notes are much easier for even a beginning student to achieve! The overall superior quality and feel of these recorders, inspires students to treat it like a professional instrument.
