The Zen Zone has provided a safe place for our students to decompress and center themselves. It is much more effective than a "time out" room, especially since it can be utilized in advance of an episode. It has helped some of our students to recognize when they are feeling overwhelmed and it gives them a place where they can relax and calm their emotions. This avoids an outburst and the need for any consequences for negative behaviors.

Goal

To create a safe space where students can reduce stimuli when they are feeling stressed and emotionally overwhelmed.

What will be done with my students

The Zen Zone will be a specially designed, designated, and approved room in the school, used for the purpose of supporting a student in the implementation of self-regulation strategies, resulting in the reduction of challenging behaviors.

It will be a place of safety and comfort and may contain materials to assist the student in calming methods. This room will be supervised by an adult, at all times, when a student is present.

This will be a voluntary space for students to come to when they are feeling overwhelmed. It is NOT a "time out" room or a form of punishment.

Benefits to my students

A calming room can help alleviate stress and assist students in regulating emotions so they can re-focus to be a successful learner. This will contribute to the improvement of the overall school learning environment.
