My goal this year in Spanish 1 is to get my students talking to each other! By focusing on comprehensible input, I hope to encourage my students to use Spanish in and out of the classroom and improve their fluency in the language. I would also like the students to get excited about Spanish culture by celebrating and studying typical events that happen around the Hispanic world, such as Dia de los Muertos. I would like them to end the year having a true understaning of the holiday/s.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 178

The students carried out various projects using the generous grant from Champion's for Learning. We were able to do the following:

1. Create 'ofrendas' using shoe boxes and typical items that belong on ofrendas- such as marigolds, butterflies, candles, etc. The students printed photos of pets or loved ones they've lost and put the photo in their box. They wrote a short description of the person and presented them on FlipGrid.

2. We learned about Quitapena dolls and their significance to Mayan/Guatemalan culture. They made their own worry doll and wrote a short description of her in Spanish. The students learned about an authentic Mayan legend that still is present in Guatemalan culture today.

3. We explored an international market with products from Spain and Latin America. The students worked in groups and chose a product to research. They presented on this product (where it is from, the history, how much it costs in the country's currency, and more). The students were able to show the authentic product to the class in the form of a gallery walk. This day we had The Women's League of Voters in our classroom and one woman had lived throughout Latin America. She connected to the lesson and talked about her experiences living in other countries.

Thank you again for helping me implement my best practice-- Cultivating Student Cultural and Linguistic Immersion.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal this year in Spanish 1 is to get my students talking to each other! By focusing on comprehensible input, I hope to encourage my students to use Spanish in and out of the classroom and improve their fluency in the language. I would also like the students to get excited about Spanish culture by celebrating and studying typical events that happen around the Hispanic world, such as Dia de los Muertos. I would like them to end the year having a true understaning of the holiday/s.

What will be done with my students

I will play speaking games (such as interrogative cubes) to help them gain confience in the language. The students will roll the dice and ask their partner questions based on the question word that it lands on. For example: "Cual es tu color favorite". I will also use the cubes to have the students generate questions in Spanish about a class reading or activity.

For Dia de los Muertos: I will incorporate short readings about Dia de los Muertos and engage the students in compare and contrast activities. Ultimately, I would like them to understand the difference between Halloween and Dia de los Muertos. They will engage in a fun PBL activity (creating a calavera) to understand the importance of the sugar skull during Dia de los Muertos.

Benefits to my students

I believe that my students can benefit significantly from speaking Spanish in SWFL. I hope that they will end the year with the confidence to order in a local Mexican, Cuban, or other Hispanic restaurant and with a geneuine and authentic understanding of the Hispanic world that forms such a big part of our lives in the United States.

Budget Narrative

1. Question Dice - Students will roll dice with question words in Spanish. They will start by asking their partner a question: "Como estas?". They can also use the dice to generate their own questions about a reading or activity in class.
2. Sugar Skull Kit- Students will decorate their own calavera. Through engaging in interactive activities, I hope for students to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of Dia de los Muertos. I have 186 students this year, so I will need 7 kits (30 per kit) in order to have enough for every student to participate.
