Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 368

Cells need to be continuously replaced. Mitosis is crucial to this process.  Mitosis is the reason we can grow, heal wounds, and replace damaged cells. Mitosis is also important in organisms which reproduce asexually: this is the only way that these cells can reproduce.  Students struggle to understand a concept that they cannot see.  With eh help of the model, students were able to ask questions about specific phases of the process of mitosis.  Students could indicate to each other exactly which phase they were looking at.  Using the microscope to observe mitosis allowed students to see real-life mitosis, to see details that the natural eye cannot see.  Much of the students’ understanding of the mitosis process came from visualizing the process using the microscope and slides.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students will be able to visually see mitosis happening giving them a better understanding of the process of cell division.

What will be done with my students

Students will use onion slices to make slides that will allow them to see mitosis happening in the cells under a microscope.

Benefits to my students

Students will be fully engaged in a hands on lab which makes the topic more approachable for all learning types of students. It will allow students to learn about the topics in a fun way and to make real world connections. They will benefit from seeing these microscopic processes right in front them.

Budget Narrative

The funds will be used to buy onion mitosis kits and slides.

Items

# Item Cost
1 Carolina BioKits: onion mitosis (4 sets) $398.00
2 plant mitosis slides (6 sets) $82.18
3 Animal mitosis slides (6 sets) $82.18
  Total: $562.36
