Original Grant Overview

Goal

I teach 125 12th grade mostly reluctant readers. My goal is to get them to discover the joy in reading a book. The characters in this book are relatable in so many ways to my diverse group of seniors.

What will be done with my students

My students will read this book together as a class. Students will analyze the text for symbolism, theme, humor and character analysis. They will respond to reading through both class discussion and written responses. They will apply and analyze the Florida B.E.S.T. standards while reading the text.

Benefits to my students

The benefit to my students is not only to actual read and enjoy a book but to be able to relate to the book. Each character in the book "carries their fair share of strengths, weaknesses and insecurities." These themes are a common thread among my seniors who are getting ready to head out into the real world. I hope that it will open their hearts and minds to value others and adapt to the world they are about to enter.

Budget Narrative

This budget will allow me to purchase a class set of the novel.
