Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 40

With the generous donation towards Lake Trafford Elementary's Garden Club, our team was able to purchase a rotating compost bin, gardening gloves for the students, and organic pest control solution. The compost bin will have scrap material, weeds, and deteriorated organic materials added it to each time the club meets. We have discussed the importance of compost, how it helps the environment, and how it helps to continue to grow gardens. The garden gloves came in handy for our students as they saved many small fingers from pain while weeding and taking care of the garden. The organic pest control was helpful because it keeps bugs and other insects away from the fruits and vegetables while being safe for children to use. This kept our plants and students safe. The garden club was incredibly successful this year with the addition of our donations!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal this year is to plant and raise a garden from seed to harvest. My students' goal is to be able to serve lunch to staff members with the fruits and vegetables we harvest from our plants.

What will be done with my students

The Garden Club at Lake Trafford consists of about 50 students who are interested in gardening and botany. Students start by propagating plants from seeds to seedlings, then transferring them over to the "big" garden. Students get to see the functions of a plant, how pollination, germination, and fertilization all work together to bring them food. By using a compost bin and worm castings, students will also learn how to create natural fertilizer for their plants that does not contain chemicals. Students will learn hard work with the use of their own gardening gloves and will understand how to take care of a garden from seed to harvest.

Benefits to my students

The life cycle and processes of a plant are part of our students' curriculums. This garden not only teaches students valuable life lessons - such as work ethic and patience - but also teaches firsthand, hands-on experiences with scientific content. Students will have a deeper understanding of complex course material by doing the work themselves.
