Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 15

Champions for Learning classroom grant gave my classroom the resources for learning a whole new set of life skills. It has had such a positive impact on my students and their ability to learn new things. Throughout the year, we used our once empty (extra) classroom as a brand new life skills classroom; where students would learn to do things such as:

  • How to ask for help if they need it
  • How to deal with and accept change
  • What to do if your routine changes
  • How to be independent in the classroom
  • How to prepare simple meals independently
  • How to do their own laundry
  • How to wash dishes
  • How to tell time
  • How to set an alarm for breaks or when work is done
  • How to follow checklists for work
  • How to make a bed
  • How to make a dining room table
  • How to set up plates and silverware when ready to eat.
  • How to vacuum & sweep
  • How to Iron clothes
  • How to bag groceries in plastic and paper
  • How to recycle and separate trash

Thank you Champions for Learning for giving my students with autism the resources to succeed when they leave the public school setting! We are forever grateful!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of the GGHS Intensive Behavior Intervention grant is to recreate/simulate a home, devoted to teaching independent living skills to our students with autism and cognitive learning disabilities.

What will be done with my students

We will transform our second empty classroom into a living space, which will allow students to practice independent living skills, such as making beds, doing laundry (folding, hanging, washing, drying), cleaning, cooking, and organizing. We want to bring these experiences to the classroom, so our students can learn to be successful once it is time for them to leave the public school system. Going out for Career Experience field trips can be limited for some of our students, so bringing the career experience directly to the classroom will provide consistency, so that every student has the opportunity to be successful.

Benefits to my students

Independent living/life skills education has been proven to have a positive effect in the classroom environment and the home life environment. It promotes a healthy social and emotional life and strengthens one's abilities to handle situations if they are ever put in the position to care for themselves. Life skills are essential to send young adults out into the world with confidence in themselves and their abilities. Teaching life skills in our classroom will help students build communication and collaborative skills, provide them with the right developmental resources, find out of the box problem-solving solutions, give them a way to communicate and develop relationships and teaches them accountability.

Budget Narrative

The money will be used to buy materials, food, and equipment for all life skills activities. We will also use the money to buy the necessary cleaning products and vocational things we need to set up the tasks in the classroom.
