Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 14

The Field Trips, Food, Fine Arts and Fantastic Dental Hygiene Grant provided funds, which were not available otherwise, to provide a monthly trip to Coastland Mall to work on our IBI-2 students' social skills in the Naples community on a monthly basis. Our students visited restaurants and stores within the mall, making contact with employees and the public, which will only aid them in developing appropriate public social skills and developing more confidence in themselves when they are outside their normal comfort zone. The funding for snack/food items were used as rewards for such items as student token boards or following classroom rules properly; we also worked on our baking skills in the classroom periodically. In addition, the grant provided funding for necessary art supplies, which we were genuinely lacking. These items helped our students enhance their fine motor skills, imagination, creativity, communication skills, confidence and self-esteem, which all build improved self-esteem. Plus, they really enjoyed the various art projects we did on a weekly basis. Finally, we worked on our dental hygiene skills every morning after breakfast, performing an important task that many of our students do not perform regularly in the home environment. Their brushing skills showed marked improvement this year.

We believe the Champions for Learning grant helped make for an even more successful 2023-24 school year for IBI-2 students at Golden Gate High School. Our students and staff greatly appreciated the funding for our unique and utterly awesome classroom! Thank you so much!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The purpose of this GGHS Intensive Behavior Intervention grant is to provide funding for a monthly lunch at Coastland Mall, snack items, art supplies, and dental hygiene items. The field trip to Coastland Mall will be focused on teaching social/life skills to our students with autism and cognitive learning disabilities. The snack items will be used as rewards for positive behaviors, the art supplies will be used to enhance the emotional well-being of our students, and the dental hygiene items will augment our students’ overall general health.

What will be done with my students

Our IBI-2 students go on Field Trips every Friday morning to further develop their social/life skills in the Naples community. Our students have made trips in the past to such places as the Naples Therapeutic Riding Center, the Naples Zoo, the Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium, and Freedom Waters boating excursions. During the 2023-24 school year we are making trips to the Coastland Mall one Friday a month for lunch and shopping.

In addition, we are requesting funding for snack items like microwavable popcorn, Cheez-It's, Goldfish crackers, pretzels, chips, and bottled water.

We are also requesting funding for various art supplies, which we are running low on currently.

We would also like to request some funding for toothpaste and toothbrushes, which the students use after breakfast, with staff assistance when necessary.

Benefits to my students

Further developing our students social/life skills will only assist them whenever they go out into the world more often as they become older. Being in the community, learning how to perform tasks like ordering food at a restaurant or shopping at a clothing store, developing appropriate public social skills, properly engaging with store and mall employees will only enhance their current abilities, and help them develop more confidence in themselves when they are outside their typical comfort zone.

The funding for snack items for our classroom will be used as rewards for such items as student token boards, or following classroom rules. Students might receive a favorite treat for engaging in positive behaviors within the classroom, or simply treating their teachers and classmates nicely with respect.

And finally, the funding for badly needed art supplies, will help our students in various ways. Creating art has been proven to be particularly useful in helping children with special needs. This can be in such ways as building fine motor skills, imagination, creativity, enhancing communication, confidence, and self-expression. And all these things greatly help boost our students self-esteem.

The funding for toothpaste and toothbrushes will help the students continue to work on improving their dental hygiene skills on a daily basis, which many do not perform regularly in the home environment.

Budget Narrative

The money for the field trips will be used to provide a monthly lunch at Coastland Mall for 13 IBI-2 students. Estimate based on 13 students, $10 per lunch, for the remaining eight months of school. 13 x 10 x 8 = $1040.

For snack items, we would spend approximately $75 a month over the remaining eight months of school. 75 x 8 = $600

For the requested art supplies, we would spend approximately $236. The amount is based on items found on Amazon.

Also requesting $100 to apply towards toothpaste and toothbrushes.
