Goal

The goal of this project is to improve student motivation to read independently through the use of SSYRA and SSYRA Jr. books.

Category

Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.

What will be done with my students

With the implementation of First Chapter Days, students will have the opportunity to listen to the first chapter of each book (first few pages of SSYRA Jr.) to help peek their interest. Students will then be able to borrow the books and continue to read independently. During intervention, students will meet with the teacher to summarize or ask for clarifications. After reading, students will take a quiz or complete a character activity. Points will be given to students based on comprehension of independent reading and earn rewards such as flexible seating, stickers, etc.

Benefits to my students

The project will benefit students in grades 2 - 5 at New Beginnings - Naples by helping to enhance their reading fluency and comprehension, as well as increasing independency. By utilizing both SSYRA and SSYRA Jr. books, I can ensure that all reading levels are successful in reading independently.
Reading the first chapter of a novel benefits students by exposing them to different genres / authors that they may otherwise overlook. Meeting with the teacher, during different times throughout the reading, will ensure comprehension prior to finishing the book and completing quiz / activity. Finally, using a point system will bring out a friendly competition within the classroom helping to build a community and love for reading.

Budget Narrative

Funding will go towards all, or most, SSYRA and SSYRA Jr books through Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Each list has approximately 15 books for a total of 30 books for purchase plus shipping and handling.
