What will be done with my students

The SSYRA Junior program is a statewide voluntary program that allows students to read the books nominated for the award in order to vote for their favorite book. Students in second grade will be independently reading these books. If they read five of these books and pass the Reading Counts test, they will be eligible to vote for their favorite book, but can read more if they choose. In April, after voting is complete, students will learn which book was the school-wide favorite, and which book was the statewide favorite. It is a wonderful way to promote independent reading!

Benefits to my students

Reading is fundamental to every student! Independently reading books helps to further a student's comprehension and vocabulary. Reading is also the stepping stone to success in every subject, helping to increase knowledge and understanding across the curriculum. The SSYRA Junior program provides students with types of books to students that they might not normally read, opening their eyes to different genres that they could possibly love.
