Goal

Civics is one of the most challenging course that my seventh graders will face this year. It includes many standards and benchmarks that the students struggle to comprehend. At the end of the course, students have a high stakes state test. The goal of this grant is to make the Civics come to life and help students better understand and apply the concepts taught in the course through use of various online games and assistance with concepts. I also want my students to be great citizens and future voters. Gamification has been proven to help students learn material in a fun and engaging way. According to Karl Kapp “Games and gamification both can lead to high levels of learner engagement and motivation.”

What will be done with my students

PearDeck is a program that allows me as the teacher to interact with my students and students interacting with one another. This online presentation platform allows one to fully engage students with critical content. As the instructor and facilitator of information to students and being able to monitor everything they do from my screen. I can stop people or an entire class. We can have challenges built into the lesson and I can check for understanding from each student. Also PearDeck allows me access in real time of what students are typing. It also has a built in feature of censorship so students cannot bully or say inappropriate responses. We can examine primary sources as a class and as individuals. This is just the tip of the iceberg. The only limitation is my creativity and funds.  

Benefits to my students

Students who are shy can now have a voice in my class. I can check for understanding and see what I need to review for better understanding. Students will be able to see growth and have fun learning. Each student will be able to work in real time and with highly engaging activities.
