Our favorite lower school pet, Dartanian, an entertaining bearded dragon, is happy and thriving. He has been part of our school community now for two years. It takes a lot each day to make sure Dartanian stays safe, warm, healthy, and happy. Bearded Dragons need a plethora of supplies on a weekly, monthly, and annual basis to stay healthy, happy, and entertained! Our goal is to continue to have our Lower School students PreK-Grade 5 visit him in our science lab and learn about reptile development, habitat, and feeding routines. We want to continue to provide Dartanian with everything he needs in order to make his environment comfortable and to keep him safe and healthy.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 150

Thanks to the Champions for Learning Grant, our classroom pet bearded dragon, Dartanian, has received all the love, attention, and support that he could need during this school year. With this grant, I’ve been able to enhance student engagement. Dartanian has sparked interest and excitement about animals, making science lessons more engaging. The new additions of enclosure recreation and enhancements have also caused our students to recognize that animals need enrichment and fun new toys, too! I’ve been able to touch on our Seacrest Core Values daily. Taking turns feeding and monitoring the dragon teaches students about responsibility, empathy, and the importance of caring for another living being. Our shared classroom pet also fosters teamwork and collaboration, as students work together to meet his needs and observe his habits. Our students have been able to watch a calm reptile, which has had a soothing effect on our students. I have also been able to keep Dartanian healthy, with a plethora of fresh vegetables topped with daily vitamins, worms, and fresh water. It’s also been helpful to have the necessary cleaning supplies to make sure his enclosure stays clean daily. I am also thankful to have been able to take Dartanian to the vet this year to make sure he’s staying fit and healthy. Thank you for allowing Dartanian and our students to have this successful hands-on educational experience.

What will be done with my students

A class pet is such a rewarding, hands-on learning experience for our students. Children build on their leadership skills and responsibility as they learn how to care for Dartanian. They will continue to learn how animals act, eat, and sleep. Dartanian needs to be fed vegetables and given fresh water twice a day. In addition, every other day, he needs live feeder insects. His enclosure needs to maintain a certain temperature and it needs to be cleaned regularly with animal safe cleaning supplies. Dartanian also needs to be entertained by including items in his enclosure that he can play with. Students will learn how to care for Dartanian using the tools and supplies that we are asking for in this grant. In our Science Lab, science lessons about animals come to life with our school pet to observe and care for.

Benefits to my students

There are many benefits to having a class pet. Students learn important values like compassion, empathy, respect and responsibility for other living animals. School pets encourage students to interact with each other and work together. This in turn can help them build a sense of community and improve their social skills. Studies also show that when exposed to school pets, students become more engaged and have higher achievement. School pets help build relationships. Animals help relieve stress and anxiety, and regulate breathing and heart rates. A classroom pet can provide peace and calm for many students. Everytime a student enters the science classroom to see Dartanian, a smile appears! In addition to keeping our children happy, Dartanian needs items to keep him happy, too. We need to update Dartanian's environment and keep it warm and clean, provide him with vitamins and healthful food, and make sure he receives his annual vet visits.
