Goal

My goal is to raise $1000.00 for a variety of food items for cooking activities that are rich with language concepts, following directions tasks, sensory input, social engagement and academic skills for my students with special needs.

Category

School-Wide, Grade-Level, Or Class Events/Programs - Parent Nights, Honor Roll Celebrations, EOY Events, etc.

What will be done with my students

I will use the money to purchase the food items necessary each week for our cooking. As the Speech Language Pathologist in multiple classes containing students with a variety of disabilities, I co teach with the Occupational Therapist to develop cooking activities on Fridays. Typically, we follow a theme for the week that integrates a book and literacy activities (i.e. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie), crafts or hands on activities (i.e. sequencing the book or making a mouse craft), and culminates with a cooking activity on Fridays (i.e. making cookies or a mouse using different food items) all within a seasonal or academic theme. Cooking helps the students to become more independent in the kitchen with utensils and appliances and understand how to handle various foods.

Benefits to my students

The students will benefit by being exposed to a variety of foods, textures, temperatures and consistencies. The students will learn how to cook independently and acquire skills that are necessary as they develop. The students learn the names of new food items and determine healthy vs. unhealthy choices. They are provided opportunities to be independent with opening food containers, mixing, stirring, blending, baking. All of the cooking activities require following directions which is part of their communication and academic goals. The cooking experience provides sensory exploration that ties into other disciplines such as Occupational Therapy. The students will benefit from learning the responsibility of handling foods, preparing and cleaning the supplies. They enjoy using a variety of foods to make a product that resembles an animal, object, or is simply a tasty snack.
