Goal

To help students be motivated and excited to learn to write along with improving fine motor and visual motor skills through a fun interactive electronic device.

Category

Electronics - Personal computers/tablets/iPads, headphones, charging cables, computer mice, etc.

What will be done with my students

The Writing Wizard is an application installed on the IPad that can grow with my students as they learn to write. The student will use their finger or Apple Pencil to form shapes and advance to writing numbers and letters as seen on the screen from the application. Learning how to correctly form each letter is essential for learning to write efficiently. Once students have mastered shapes, numbers, and letters, I can create custom word lists for students, giving them the chance to practice writing their names, sight words, and more.

Benefits to my students

Students with special needs such as children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down syndrome and ADHD often need a multi-sensory approach to learning. They also require a motivating teaching strategy to engage in non-preferred activities like handwriting. The use of the iPad with the addition of the application called The Writing Wizard, students will learn to properly form shapes, letters and numbers. Learning the skill on an electronic device that is motivating and fun will be easier to generalize to paper and pencil tasks. The students will also benefit from improvements in their fine motor skills by learning to hold the writing tool with a functional grasp.

Budget Narrative

The iPad with the added application of the Writing Wizard will the interactive electronic device that will be used for this project. The Apple Pencil will teach students how to hold the writing tool with the proper hand positioning. This will help with transferring from the electronic device to paper and pencil tasks. The OtterBox and Apple Care Plan will help to prevent the potential damage and loss of the device if an accident occurs.
