Goal(s)

The goal of this grant is to improve speech production for many of my students on my caseload that have difficulty producing an /r/ sound, which greatly affects their ability to be understood by others and often negatively impacts their literacy skills, self esteem, and ability to effectively communicate.

Project Description

Did you know that the /r/ sound is a challenging sound to master in English because it has many variations in pronunciation. In fact, the consonants and vowels before and after the /r/ can influence the way the mouth moves, which changes the pronunciation. These factors can combine to create over 30 different /r/ sounds, which are very challenging for many of my students in speech therapy. This therapy inventory will help me determine the specific strategies for each child I work with in order to maximize progress. The therapy bundle then provides me with the target words/pictures/cues to use in their therapy sessions that are personalized for each student. 

 

Expected Outcomes

This grant would provide me with thorough assessments and effective interventions for the pesky /r/ sound! The grant aims to enhance speech production for students struggling with the /r/ sound, improving their intelligibility, boosting their literacy skills, increasing their self-esteem, and enabling more effective communication. I can use these materials year after year with many students across all grade levels.
