Learning to ride a bicycle is a keystone in a child's development. Not only is bicycle riding important in the development of motor coordination, strength, and endurance, but research has proven it is also a common form of physical activity that supports the development of self-esteem. Through the use of tricycles, my goal is to support my pre-k students in strengthening their gross motor skills, as well as their social/ emotional well being.

Goal

Learning to ride a bicycle is a keystone in a child's development. Not only is bicycle riding important in the development of motor coordination, strength, and endurance, but research has proven it is also a common form of physical activity that supports the development of self-esteem. Through the use of tricycles, my goal is to support my pre-k students in strengthening their gross motor skills, as well as their social/ emotional well being.

Category

Physical Education Equipment - Rackets, bats, balls, nets, jump ropes, etc.

What will be done with my students

All Pre-k students at Sabal Palm elementary will have weekly access to the tricycles during outside exploration time. In addition to utilizing playground equipment, students may choose tricycles as one of their outdoor activities. Teachers will monitor students' use of the tricycles, and offer guided support when needed. The tricycles will be incorporated into various teacher-led outdoor activities such as gross motor development games and obstacle courses.

Benefits to my students

Learning to ride a bike (or tricycle) at a young age benefits students in multiple ways. Learning to pedal helps children improve their motor integration as they manage to coordinate complex movement between the brain and muscles. It gets children excited about playing outdoors and away from electronic devices. Learning to ride a bike as a young child promotes self-confidence and independence. Lastly, riding a bike keeps young children physically healthy by engaging multiple muscle groups including the legs (pedaling), core (balance) and arms (steering).
