Goal

We are asking for materials for the best group of students in our school district! Our transition work study class is made up of students ages 18-22 who have special needs. Our class is held at Golden Gate High School and our students have deferred their high school diplomas in order to attend our program. After running school businesses and participating in life skills lessons each morning, these students then go to various businesses to work in various capacities for the remainder of the day. Before leaving for work, our students are expected to check to make sure that they look professional for the work day. One of our transition goals deals with self-advocacy as it relates to daily living. We want our students to demonstrate effective skills to participate in all aspects of age-appropriate daily living and self-help activities. In order to do this, we encourage our students by telling them they will feel good for the day if they look good!

What will be done with my students

We would like to have the students complete a grooming check each morning when they enter the school. Since one of our goals is for daily living skills, we want to encourage our students to complete self-help activities. Some of the students do not complete such activities at home so we want to make sure that they have the time to complete them when they get to us. Some of the tasks that we except them to complete include washing their face, brushing/styling their hair, brushing their teeth, putting deodorant on, and having clean clothes. After checking off all of the grooming tasks, they then get approval and get their check-list signed. In order to make this a successful program, we would like to set up a Look Good Feel Station in our classroom. We want a place for our students to look their best and to feel good about going out to the job sites. 

Benefits to my students

This program will benefit our students because it correlates with our curriculum of the development of daily living skills. The way you present yourself to your employer also can be beneficial in obtaining employment. We think that implemented this program will not only be fun for the interns, but also of great importance in their daily lives. A second benefit of this program is that we would like to have our students take part in the inventory of the purchased items. They can count the items and then sort them for us and add up the prices to make sure that everything adds up.
