Goal

Students will learn the fundamental principles of hydroponics, which is the process of growing plants without soil. When students grow plants hydroponically, they begin to investigate plant needs through a different lens and have the chance to develop a deep understanding about the conditions required for healthy plant growth and development.

What will be done with my students

After an introduction to Hydroponic Gardening, where students will learn the basic principles of hydroponics, we will begin to plant our own class garden. This is an excellent tool for STEM education, as I will be integrating the various sciences such as biology, chemistry, math, business, and more into their lessons! Students will be conducting experiments to study the parameters that affect crop growth, comparing natural and artificial light sources, and learning how different chemical elements can affect plants. To broaden the scope of the lessons beyond just the plants themselves, students will also be exploring topics like sustainability and food security. 

Benefits to my students

Hydroponic gardening can teach kids about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts, as well as art, creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and teamwork. The process of growing plants without soil can also engage kids in experimentation, problem-solving, and self-growth. Hydroponic gardens provide an innovative and exciting way to incorporate science education into my curriculum. With a little creativity, the possibilities for learning and exploration are limitless!
