Our goal as teachers is to use every second of instruction to help students with specific learning disabilities bridge the learning gap between their peers. At Educational Pathways Academy our students are struggling readers, many with dyslexia. As teachers, we need materials that are easy and effective to use. We teach with a researched based Orton Gillingham program through The Institute for Multi Sensory Education (IMSE).

Goal

Our goal as teachers is to use every second of instruction to help students with specific learning disabilities bridge the learning gap between their peers. At Educational Pathways Academy our students are struggling readers, many with dyslexia. As teachers, we need materials that are easy and effective to use. We teach with a researched based Orton Gillingham program through The Institute for Multi Sensory Education (IMSE).

What will be done with my students

A key part of IMSE classroom reading instruction is called a Three-Part Drill. During this time, teachers lead a multi sensory approach for students to practice letter sounds. One piece of this drill is the Auditory Kinesthetic component. The teacher will say, “You know two ways to spell this sound. The sound is /K/." Students then write the two ways to spell K. (c and k)

We are seeking funding so that each student has can use a reusable writing and drawing tabled called a Boogie Board. The learning tool would be used during the Three-Part Drill instruction.

Students will write the sounds on the individual boards during the Auditory Kinesthetic component of the Three-Part Drill of the IMSE Orton Gillingham lesson which supports students with language based learning disabilities like dyslexia.

Benefits to my students

The Boogie Board will be an efficient and fun way for students to participate actively in the drill. The drill, made fun and more efficient for our students, will help them build a strong sound symbol correspondence that supports reading fluency and spelling skills.

When working with students that are struggling and behind academically, time is one of the most important things in class. Using the Boogie Boards will make the transition to the Auditory Kinesthetic component of our Three Part Drill lesson (hearing the sounds and writing the letters) seamless and fast, supporting academic gains and building confidence. Students won’t need to log in to a computer or even get different materials. The Boogie Boards work with just a touch of the button and they are ready to go.

Boogie Boards are durable, light, easy to pass out, and easy to collect. This learning tool will support the Auditory Kinesthetic component of instruction that will benefit all of our multi sensory learners.

Budget Narrative

We are seeking funding for 36 Boogie Board reusable writing tablets. Each Boogie Board is $18.49. This grant will provide sufficient funds for enough Boogie Boards for each student in three Orton Gillingham IMSE classes.
