The Goal of this grant is to improve communication skills of students in Modified Curriculum (MC) Classrooms and Pre-K D (Disability) classrooms by providing students with colored pictures to communicate. Many students in these classrooms have difficulty communicating basic needs such as the need to use the bathroom, asking for help, asking for food or drink, or requesting things they like. To help these students communicate more effectively, we use pictures alone or paired with an augmentative alternative communication device (AAC). These pictures are best utilized in color so that they more closely resemble the actual object or communication topic and are easier to discriminate (vs. black and white pictures).
Electronics - Personal computers/tablets/iPads, headphones, charging cables, computer mice, etc.
My students will use a variety of pictures to communicate after they are laminated and placed in specific
PECS binders, used on visual schedules so that they know what to anticipate in their daily routines, and used with AAC devices to give them the vocabulary they need to express their wants, needs, thoughts, and ideas.
AAC and picture communication truly gives children a voice to express themselves in their educational environment. This in turn creates a better classroom environment, enhances learning, and decreases frustration and behaviors that impede learning and progress. Children feel successful and content when they are able to express themselves. Everyone deserves a voice!
