My goal is to have students and their families engage with literacy activities in a fun filled way that encompasses the components of reading at our annual Family Literacy Night.
School-Wide, Grade-Level, Or Class Events/Programs - Parent Nights, Honor Roll Celebrations, EOY Events, etc.
Students and their families will be given the opportunity to visit either the K-2 Rainforest Escape Room or the 3-5 Rainforest Escape Room or both during our annual Family Literacy Night. In these rooms they will use literacy skills such as alphabetical order, rhyming, parts of speech, and comprehension strategies to solve puzzles to unlock the code and "escape" the room. Examples of the activities are an ABC order rainforest puzzle, fishing for rhyming frogs, a non-fiction text scavenger hunt, and several games that use context clues and figurative language. We will also bring back our very popular room in which the high school football team comes to read to our students straight from their football practice. We will provide pizza to them and to our high school honor students that come volunteer.
Some of the materials are reusable and can be repurposed after our literacy event to create escape room opportunities in individual classrooms. For example, the boxes and locks can be reused for cross curricular classroom escape rooms and the rhyming frogs and ABC order puzzles can be used in appropriate grade level classrooms. The books will become part of our media center or classroom libraries.
Our students and families will benefit from the opportunity to experience the components of reading in a fun and multi-sensory manner. They will see that learning and reading can be fun. It will leave them with memorable experiences that they can connect to their classroom instruction. These type of experiences help to build neural connections and file learning into long term memory. Students still talk about last year's GLOW Literacy night and teachers are still using the materials in their classrooms!
My budget consists of items to make the activities for the rainforest escape room including paper, ink, and cardstock; as many items need to be printed. I also include the puzzles that I will need to make for the rooms and the fishing poles, magnets and frogs for the rooms. I included boxes and locks for the students to put their code in after solving the activities in each room so they can claim their prize. I included small prizes for them to win upon opening the box. Lastly I included rainforest books for the read aloud room, which was very popular last year. The pizza gift cards are to feed the football players and high school honor students that come to read to our students and volunteer.
