Students spend the majority of their day attending school, and it has been shown that the school environment can have a significant impact on students' learning potential by improving attendance rates, test scores, promotion rates, and graduation rates. In a 2018 study done by the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health it was found that students had better attendance and higher test scores when surrounded by more stimulating environments. Immokalee Middle School has a high population of economically needy students but where we believe that all students can learn when provided with a nurturing and safe environment where academic and personal excellence can be achieved.
Class Furniture - Carpets, choral risers, transitional seating/desks, etc.
Students learn best when they are engaged in their learning and there is no better way to do this than with hands-on experiences that are relatable to their own lives. Having access to an outdoor classroom will allow my 8th grade students to study things like physical and chemical changes, forces, motion, and forms of energy without the constraints that come with a normal classroom.
This grant would allow us to improve a 40'x 30' protected outdoor space with engaging murals and outdoor tables and chairs for the students to work on their laptops or complete a scientific investigations. We will also use this grant to purchase 15 gallons of paint to decorate the surrounding columns with murals to embellish the area and increase interest.
Most of my students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and achieving success as learners is crucial for their future success beyond school. Occasionally, a change of environment can significantly reengage the prefrontal cortex—the region of the brain responsible for decision-making, self-regulation, and executive functions. Enhancing these cognitive processes can, in turn, boost student autonomy, confidence, creativity, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. By providing opportunities for my students to learn in functional and stimulating outdoor settings, we can address these developmental areas, which will contribute to academic success and improved test scores.
This grant will be the first part of an ongoing effort to provide more engaging learning spaces for students at Immokalee Middle School. I eventually hope to purchase more tables and chairs to accommodate more students and add equipment to increase learning opportunities.
