The goal of incorporating magnetic letters into our Science of Reading programs is to provide students with a hands-on, interactive tool to reinforce foundational literacy skills. Magnetic letters will support phonemic awareness, phonics, and word-building, all critical components of the Science of Reading framework. The program is designed to align with research-based literacy instruction, which focuses on the systematic development of reading skills. By integrating magnetic letters into daily lessons, we aim to enhance students’ understanding of letter-sound relationships, word formation, and spelling patterns, laying a strong foundation for literacy success.

What will be done with my students

Students will use magnetic letters during small-group and individualized instruction to engage in activities that focus on phonemic awareness and phonics. For example, students may use the letters to practice blending sounds, segmenting words, or constructing words from dictated sounds. Teachers will guide students through exercises that involve manipulating the magnetic letters to visually and physically connect sounds with symbols, reinforcing their understanding of letter-sound correspondences. Activities will be scaffolded according to student proficiency levels, ensuring that all students, regardless of their reading ability, can benefit from using the magnetic letters to build confidence in their literacy skills.

Benefits to my students

Using magnetic letters as part of the Science of Reading program will provide numerous benefits to students. The tactile nature of magnetic letters helps reinforce learning through kinesthetic engagement, making abstract phonemic concepts more concrete and accessible. This hands-on approach will support students who learn best through visual and physical interaction, helping to deepen their understanding of how sounds correspond to written language.

Furthermore, the use of magnetic letters will improve decoding skills, spelling accuracy, and fluency, which are all essential for reading comprehension. As students gain mastery over letter-sound relationships, they will become more confident, independent readers. This, in turn, will contribute to overall academic achievement and a stronger literacy foundation at our school, helping us improve outcomes in reading proficiency across all grade levels.
