My main goal is to create an inviting, relaxing, engaging space that gets the students out from under the florescent lights that are typically in a standard classroom and into an outdoor classroom filled with sunshine and fresh air that will promote learning. The outdoor classroom can be utilized by all the 8th grade science classes if not most of the school. I would like to purchase metal tables and chairs that can withstand the elements of nature to make an inviting space for students to be outside while they learn. Ideally the space will have outdoor artificial grass as a carpet to minimize the noise of the chairs. I would also like to fill the space with colorful plants, and to paint the walls with elements from all three grade levels of science. It would also be beneficial to have portable technology that can be used for instruction.

I will use the outdoor classroom as a learning tool to improve my student learning experience as expressed in the Harvard Graduate School of Education report. In an effort to help students achieve higher scores on standardized tests and in life I will use the outdoor classroom to help facilitate student learning. The outdoor classroom will also be open to all students at Immokalee Middle School in order to enhance student learning on a daily basis.
According to the Harvard Graduate School of Education, an outdoor setting, like an outdoor classroom can help students score higher on standardized tests than children taught in a traditional classroom.
Outdoor learning can improve brain development and function by providing fresh air and natural light, both of which are important daily.
Being in an outdoor classroom opens more activities, experiments, and observation that other wise would be limited in a traditional classroom, such as making hot air balloons, launching Alka-Seltzer rockers, or working on understanding balanced and unbalanced forces using a tug-of-war rope.
The outdoor classroom would also be beneficial for our 6th and 7th grade science teacher as the teach earth, space and life sciences and what better way to do this than to be outside and apart of life then sitting in a classroom with florescent lights.
For our budget we would require approximately $1,982.93. These funds will be spent to purchase 7 sets of barstools, 6 bar high Lancaster tables, a 40” LED TV, and a Rolling Mobile TV stand.
Given that our school has no outside learning areas this equipment will be used to build an outdoor classroom. Table and chairs are so that the students have a place to sit and conduct experiments or general learning activities. The TV and TV stand will be used to help give instruction and facilitate learning, The rolling cart will permit us to secure the TV and store it out of the elements.
Without this equipment students will be forced to remain in a traditional classroom under fluorescent lights, whereas an outdoor environment has been proven to improve student learning which in turn improves students standardized test scores.
