My ESE (MC 2 and 3 Special Needs) students are amazing and so deserving. My goal with this project is to instill pride, independence, responsibility, job skills, and work ethic in my class of inspiring students. I want my students to learn the fun and the value of the hard work that can come from gardening and growing food while also making gains academically during the cross curricular lessons that will incorporate the garden. This garden will be used year after year with the students I have now and future students.

What will be done with my students

My students, along with another incredible ESE/MC 3 class who will cooperatively help, will learn everything needed to grow a variety of plants and flowers. They will learn about soil quality, pollination, nutrients needed for plants, how and when to plant a variety of plants, the importance of watering properly, the importance of weeding and taking care of plants, life cycles of plants, when and how to harvest, how to cook with those same vegetables as well as the nutritional value they provide.

Benefits to my students

Without this project, most, if not all, of these students will likely never have the opportunity to learn how to garden from start to finish. They will gain valuable and practical knowledge of how to garden and grow food as well as where food comes from. They will gain pride, independence, and responsibility during the process. They will also learn how to cook/prepare these vegetables in a variety of ways. They will gain valuable and practical skills to aid them in gaining employment upon graduation from high school. My students will also benefit academically as I incorporate ELA (reading and writing), math, science, and social studies into cross curricular lessons.
