The goal is to provide a better flow and more mobility for the two CCPS Debate Coordinators by providing them with mobile workstations for running debate tournaments and coach/judges training sessions. These two teachers oversee the MS and HS debate competitions. Dr. Ramsay-Sinclair communicates with the 10 middle school debate coaches across the district. Dr. Gomez does the same for 7 high school debate coaches. As the teacher coordinators, they are responsible for all the pairings, setting up the rooms (at a different school location each time), training judges, assigning those judges, and physically running each of the debate rounds. These supplies will not only make their jobs easier, but they will allow the debate tournament process to run more smoothly. A mobile workstation would allow these teachers to quickly move from room to room addressing student, coach, or judging needs as they arise. The workstation would allow for faster tabulation of ballots resulting in quicker results to both coaches and students. The workstation would also hold a small white board for posting judge assignments and announcing room changes.

What will be done with my students

Students would have access to a printer so that speeches could be printed. This often needs to be done due to last minute changes in the speech or the speaker. Many students don't have access to printers on the weekends and a small printer on the workstation eliminate that difficulty. Room assignments, judge information, and/or ballots may need to be adjusted. A printer would make this possible. New room assignments could be more readily posted, resulting in each debate starting in a timely manner. As the coordinator has to physically begin each debate, a mobile workstation moves that process along.

Benefits to my students

The students, as public speaking learners, feel more prepared and confident when they can hold their speeches in their hands. Not being able to print speeches raises their anxiety levels. This can slow down the entire debate process as the other students must wait while the issue is resolved. The teacher coordinator may also be moving between as many as 10 rooms, making frequent stops. Currently they are hand-carrying paperwork and spreadsheets; however, a mobile workstation would increase their workflow and success of each debate round. Ultimately, students could better focus on their presentations for each round. Coaches would be dealing with fewer distractions. Judge assignments would be smoother, and of course, the coordinators could better utilize their energy by engaging with all those in attendance at each event, having all needed materials within reach.
