Classroom Grants: Find It & Fund It, Collier
Champions For Learning’s Classroom Grants program aims to provide teachers with funding for supplies, school-wide projects, classroom items, and enrichment activities not included in the school’s budget. According to the National Education Association, more than 90% of teachers spend an average of $500 of their own money each year to purchase school supplies and other items their students need to succeed in the classroom.
Individuals, organizations, and businesses have an exciting opportunity to invest in the great ideas of our local educators, who are creating amazing learning experiences in their classrooms that will impact students for years to come. Keep Debate Rolling
Lely High
The goal is to provide a better flow and more mobility for the two CCPS Debate Coordinators by providing them with mobile workstations for running debate tournaments and coach/judges training sessions. These two teachers oversee the MS and HS debate competitions. Dr. Ramsay-Sinclair communicates with the 10 middle school debate coaches across the district. Dr. Gomez does the same for 7 high school debate coaches. As the teacher coordinators, they are responsible for all the pairings, setting up the rooms (at a different school location each time), training judges, assigning those judges, and physically running each of the debate rounds. These supplies will not only make their jobs easier, but they will allow the debate tournament process to run more smoothly. A mobile workstation would allow these teachers to quickly move from room to room addressing student, coach, or judging needs as they arise. The workstation would allow for faster tabulation of ballots resulting in quicker results to both coaches and students. The workstation would also hold a small white board for posting judge assignments and announcing room changes.

I work with many struggling readers who have repeated a grade and they feel deflated when they encounter text and reading activities. Many of these students have low confidence in regards to their reading and writing ability.
I establish individualized, realistic expectations for my students and I would like to encourage them to keep trying and taking risks. When students attain a goal, they are given verbal praise but for some students extrinsic rewards are also helpful. This grant is a request for rewards for reading when literacy goals are attained.

Through something as simple as a mural on a wall, or a fun (interactive) walkway on the ground, this grant will allow us a continued opportunity to empower students and staff with the skills to be and feel successful. In addition, the opportunity to add a sensory/interactive walkway to our campus also “supports provides an engaging space and activity for children to work on gross motor body movement, develop coordination skills, strengthen the core body, increase focus and attention, develop peer relationships, and build friendships” (The Sensory Path). My main goal is to create an inviting, relaxing, engaging space that gets the students out from under the florescent lights that are typically in a standard classroom and into an outdoor classroom filled with sunshine and fresh air that will promote learning. The outdoor classroom can be utilized by all the 8th grade science classes if not most of the school. I would like to purchase metal tables and chairs that can withstand the elements of nature to make an inviting space for students to be outside while they learn. Ideally the space will have outdoor artificial grass as a carpet to minimize the noise of the chairs. I would also like to fill the space with colorful plants, and to paint the walls with elements from all three grade levels of science. It would also be beneficial to have portable technology that can be used for instruction.

Our goal is to deliver informative and engaging lessons to the students in our Modified Curriculum Department. Most of these students have a physical, emotional or intellectual disability and lessons need to be tailored to their level of understanding. Brain Pop is a proven educational tool to help students make lasting connections, dive deep into fundamental concepts, and have meaningful learning experiences. BrainPOP is a collection of educational websites that offers animated videos, quizzes, and other resources for students in grades K–8. The site covers a wide range of topics, including science, social studies, English, math, and more. BrainPOP is backed by research and has been shown to raise academic achievement, which is the ultimate goal. The site has been recognized for enhancing digital age teaching and learning. The site's resources include BrainPop.com, for grades 3–8 and up (ages 9 and up) and BrainPop Jr., for grades K-3 (ages 5 to 9). Additionally, BrainPop ELL (English Language Learner), targets our students who are learning English as a second language. BrainPop's free GameUp website contains online games from third-party game publishers that coordinate with the BrainPop, BrainPop Jr. and BrainPop ELL curricula.

The Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) Program is a statewide reading motivational program for students in grades 3 through 8. The purpose of the SSYRA Program is to encourage students to read independently for pleasure and to read books that are on, above, and below their reading level in order to improve their reading fluency. Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. The SSYRA committee is comprised of 20 qualified school librarians located throughout the state of Florida, subdivided into two committees- grades 3-5 and grades 6-8.
Media specialists representing all districts across the state work with integrity and heart to curate great lists each year, with the goal for each and every one of Florida’s students to find three books they want to read and with which they can connect. That’s all it takes for students to vote for their favorites: read at least three and vote. We are especially proud of these lists, knowing they are for our students first and believe that students will find at least three to read this year. We know that not every book is for every student, but we want every student to have the chance to find the book they need, whether it be a window, a mirror, or a door to another world.

To this end, I plan to use this grant to restock drawing supplies for all the grades at Donahue. Elementary schoolers will benefit from having access to plentiful construction paper in a variety of sizes and colors, and middle school and high school students will benefit from working with high-quality drawing paper, pencils, and kneaded erasers designed for more serious projects. There is no substitute for good drawing practice, and with this grant I aim to prioritize all my students’ access to the necessary materials.

Students will be introduced to a pioneer of the “Rock and Roll” movement of the 1950’s. My long-term goal is to introduce a new pioneer of “Rock and Roll” each school year. By the end of the project this year, students will be familiar with the history of the selected musician. They will appreciate that person’s contributions to rock music and other genres. Students will also be exposed to instruments that are physically and aurally similar to instruments used by the selected musician/band. The final lesson of this project allows students to perform a simplified arrangement of one of the musician’s popular songs on the instrument “replicas.”
The musician I have chosen for the 2024-2025 school year will be Buddy Holly. Buddy Holly was included in the first group of inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was the first rock performer to utilize and standardize the instrumentation of a lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass guitar and percussion for rock bands of the 1950’s. Holly was also one of the first performers to experiment with double-tracking/overdubbing. He was a significant contributor to the creation of “popular” music by bridging the gap between blues, country and rock. Additionally, Holly has cemented his place of importance in music history by influencing many subsequent musicians. These include: The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Pete Townshend, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello and many others.

Additionally, academic development Telling Time is a basic math skill that can help students understand more complex concepts like fractions, decimals, and measurements. Elementary students are typically introduced to analog clocks in kindergarten and or first grade, where they learn about the different hands, the numbers on the clock face, and how to read time. The L.I.F.E. (Learning Independent Functional Employment) program is a transition work study opportunity for students with special needs ages 18-22. The vocational program provides multiple hands-on job training opportunities at Royal Poinciana Golf Club and is offered through Barron Collier High School.
One of the goals of this grant is to teach the interns to consistently wear a watch and learn how to independently tell time and manage their daily schedule by determining when to start in their departments, go to lunch, return to their training area, and then sign out for the day. Wearing a watch is a more professional method of telling time compared to using a cell phone and cell phone use is not permitted at the private club where we train.
The second goal of wearing the fitness tracking watch is to help the interns become more aware of their personal fitness and wellness by instructing them on how to count their steps. One of the employee benefits at Royal Poinciana Golf Club is a cash bonus each month as they make their step and fitness goals for at least 10 days out of the month. We would like to offer a similar benefit for our non-paid interns using our program’s token economy.

Seacrest Country Day School (SCDS) is committed to whole-child education for all students from Prekindergarten through 12th Grade. Because Seacrest educators know that academic learning is contingent on social and emotional well-being, they are intent on integrating supportive interventions that promote the prosocial behavior of all students. The 2024-25 goal for SCDS is to ensure that the entire community from Prekindergarten through 12th Grade becomes well-versed in the intellectual understanding and practical application of the SCDS Core Values of kindness, respect, gratitude, empathy, perseverance, integrity, responsibility, cooperation, curiosity, and creativity. A character trait has been assigned to each month with age-appropriate discussions and learning activities presented at each grade level.
One essential learning activity is the exploration of children’s literature picture books. Through this grant, at least 30 of our current 5th graders will be able to participate in an after school Drama Club at Osceola Elementary. Students will engage in weekly theater instruction that reinforces classroom curriculum standards and develops social emotional learning skills like self-confidence and teamwork. The program will conclude with a performance of “Annie Kids” for their families and school community.
Our school has never had a Drama Club before. I hope to make it a success this year and continue offering this opportunity to students in future years.

Increasing engagement in our struggling readers is an on-going problem. Middle school students who are reading below grade-level don't naturally gravitate towards books when they are looking for something fun to do Part of this could be because they don't come from print-rich homes with a variety of options for them to choose from. Another reason could be they are hesitant to select an independent book that their peers may see as 'babyish,' thus embarrassing them. I would like to provide a lending library to each of our three intensive classrooms that contain high-interest books that have lower lexiles, making them easier for struggling readers to read independently. The books will appear to be middle-school level, so students won't be embarrassed. However, they will be within the 3 - 5th grade lexile band making them appropriate for independent reading

These headsets would give the students more exposure to working backstage and the technical aspects of theater. My Hero - My Story - My Future

The purpose of the program is to assist high school second language learners in their development of reading, writing, and speaking skills. Through this project each language learner will study a successful immigrant who has achieved a professional goal similar to what the student would like to achieve. Over the course of several weeks, students will develop a biography about their 'hero', author their personal story, and then describe goals for their own futures. This grant will provide support materials in the form of biographies and second language learner success guides as well as materials for presentation boards for each student. The culminating activity will be presentations of their boards (My Hero-My Story-My Future) to classmates and invited guests. Research has shown that role models motivate second language learners, especially those with similar life experiences. This project gives high school English Language Learners the opportunity to read and write about those who have walked in similar shoes and have gone on to become leaders in their fields. If they see it, they believe it, and they can achieve it.

I'm Bored, They're Bored, We All Need New White Boards
Sabal Palm Elementary
The goal is to provide students with interactive dry erase whiteboards. Whiteboards improve learning through increased participation and collaboration among students. They provide an alternate method of learning (visual and auditory). Whiteboards are a tool to manage instruction so that students can construct their own knowledge and understanding from evidence. They are a quick and cost-effective way of assessing students and help in identifying students’ misconceptions. Whiteboards provide insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the class in understanding a particular concept or standard so that scaffolding can be provided.
This grant was originally funded in 2019. One hundred first grade students were given interactive dry erase whiteboards, markers, and erasers! Increased engagement, participation, motivation and collaboration among students was observed when students used the whiteboards during instruction. The whiteboards were used for whole class interactive lessons, reviewing concepts, guided practice, targeted help, small group interactive lessons, one-on-one instruction, and learning centers. Students love learning and writing on whiteboards! With the addition of students to first grade and repeated daily use of the boards, I am asking for funding to purchase new boards and markers.

The goal of this grant is to help support my mission and vision as a School Counselor at Sabal Palm Elementary School (SPE). In addition to our CCPS District School Counseling Mission, identifying and minimizing barriers to student learning and promoting student success, my mission is to help all students feel happy, safe and want to come to school. I believe this idea not only starts at home however, starts right in the classroom with the classroom teacher. In years past, I have been able to host “Self-Care Bingo” with staff members at SPE on holiday breaks that occur seasonally throughout the year; fall, winter and spring. While I would like to continue this for the staff at SPE this 2024-2025 school year, I would also like to start a new initiative called “Coffee with the Counselor.” “Coffee with the Counselor” will support my role as a School Counselor in connecting with teachers, faculty and staff, networking with outside organizations, and ensuring that all teachers feel happy, safe, and inspired to continue to work in one of the hardest, yet most reward professions, teaching! Any chance that I have to give back to our teachers and staff is a win! They are AMAZING!

ClassDojo is a tool used by teachers to reward positive behavior. It is used all day, everyday. Students are rewarded for great behavior with 'Dojo points'. Each week those points are traded in for prizes. It is private, but parents can check their child's points. Great behavior means more time on task and better instruction. More time on task means better learning.

I would like to submit a request for a grant to fund the continuous study, observation and enjoyment of the butterflies on VME’s campus. I have been devoted to this “outside classroom” learning opportunity for years and have nurtured the habitat for the monarch butterfly, the Zebra Longwing and other Florida butterflies. I am committed to the upkeep and the continuous rotation/recycling of the plants, which are the food source and pollinator plants for the butterflies. Donations by families and other staff members happen occasionally. As this project has grown to a whole new level of interest, engagement and learning, so has the expense! The photo above is of just a small group of VME Campus Caretakers, who have taken on the leadership role of caring for the VME garden(s).

Our class is held at Golden Gate High School and our students have deferred their high school diplomas in order to attend our program. After running school businesses and participating in life skills lessons each morning, these students then go to various businesses to work in various capacities for the remainder of the day. Before leaving for work, our students are expected to check to make sure that they look professional for the work day. One of our transition goals deals with self-advocacy as it relates to daily living. The 'Active Minds' project is designed to significantly enhance student engagement and academic performance by incorporating increased physical movement opportunities within the classroom. The inspiration for this project came from a former and current student, who asked, 'Mrs. Sponseller, do you remember when I was in your 3rd-grade class and we had all that movement stuff? Why can’t we have that at high school?'
In 2017, the successful “Just Keep Moving” grant allowed me to purchase movement equipment for my classroom at Laurel Oak Elementary. The student, who was in my class that year, is now at Barron Collier High School, where I support her as an ESE Inclusion Teacher. Her question highlighted the need for movement-friendly classrooms beyond the elementary level, leading to the creation of the 'Active Minds' grant proposal.
