Goal

The goal of this grant is to provide my 2nd grade students with OSMO, an interactive software, for each iPad that is currently in our classroom. Two OSMO Genius Kits would provide my students with an interactive learning experience that will incorporate technology, reading comprehension, and number sense through the use of iPads software and corresponding manipulatives. Each set includes: letter tiles, number tiles, and dot dice to help reinforce skills in core content areas.  

 

What will be done with my students

Every student in my second grade class will have the opportunity to use OSMO whether it is independently or cooperatively with classmates. It includes basic picture vocabulary to complex knowledge ranging across content areas. OSMO will be used daily during English Language Arts and math. During English Language Arts, students can use OSMO during literacy centers. Working with a partner, students will practice building words with vowel patterns/phonics skills, recognize sight words, and deepen vocabulary knowledge. For our math block, students will use OSMO to practice math facts and strengthen their number sense.

OSMO allows students to become hands on with the iPad. It is an accessory that clips onto the camera piece of the iPad, allowing the reflection to be seen, showing their answers. OSMO allows the iPad to essentially "come alive" and allow students to watch their learning through technology.

Benefits to my students

Incorporating OSMO into my classroom would be beneficial for all my students, regardless of academic level. OSMO not only provides the opportunity for students to think critically, but also fosters an environment for social interaction and collaboration. For my ESOL students, these kit adaptions will allow students access to picture vocabulary of words across all content areas, which is vital when learning a new language. Additionally, the teacher or students can create their own activities for peers to complete. Furthermore, it provides students to have confidence, excitement, and engagement when participating in center activities with peers while enduring a new language and culture.
