Goal

Our goal is to expose students to the Florida Social Studies standards and current events with engaging newspaper type articles that include non-fiction text features.  

 

What will be done with my students

Students will use their Social Studies Weekly to read and investigate the standards that we are addressing each week and to explore current events in an age appropriate manner. Parts of the Social Studies Weekly will be incorporated into literacy centers and part will be used in Social Studies and be guided by the teacher. Social Studies Weekly will be used to differentiate instruction due to its accessibility to multiple styles of learning, ability levels and English Language Learners. The students will be able to take the Social Studies Weekly home with them and share it with their families, which is vital for our students that do not have access to a variety of reading materials at home.  

 

Benefits to my students

The benefit of using Social Studies Weekly is the exposure to engaging reading materials that focus on the Social Studies Standards and allow students ownership of the material. The excitement of being able to take it home and share with their families allows them additional opportunities to read and interact with the material. The fact that the material is full of text features and is available digitally for use by the teacher makes this easy to differentiate and reach more students. The illustrations help to enhance our English Language Learners vocabulary.  

 

Budget Narrative

The social studies weeklies are $5.49 for each student for the entire year. We have 120 students in our Poinciana third grade. Shipping is a total of $65.88.
