Goal

To provide the students with a hands-on experience they will never forget. While learning about the physical properties of metals, students will be given the opportunity to make a ring out of a quarter that they can keep.

What will be done with my students

Students will use a die set to place a hole in the center of a metal disk.

Then the students will hammer the disc down a jeweler's mandrel using a 3/4" Schedule 40 PVC Pipe to personally experience the malleability of metals.

Finally they will sand and polish their ring before wearing it.

Follow-Up: Students will study the chemical and physical properties of metals verses nonmetals after completing this memorable lab in class.

Benefits to my students

Students will personally learn that metals are malleable and lustrous and they will use that knowledge to make a family keepsake.
