Goal

The goal of this grant is to allow students access to biographies of inspirational people. They will have the opportunity to read, research, write, and share about their favorite person. Hopefully, they will make a connection between that person’s life and their own.biographies of inspirational people. Each child will have the opportunity to research, write and share about a favorite person and make a connection between that person’s life and their own. 

 

What will be done with my students

The students will read the illustrated biographies of two famous people (one familiar and one unknown). They will choose one person to write about. Each student will reread their chosen person's biography and take notes about that person’s life. This will allow them to practice note taking and paraphrasing skills. Then they will use the computer to do even more research about their favorite famous person. Once they have enough information, the students will write reports and present them to the group. Perhaps they will even present their research to their entire class. They will showcase their report with a poster or PowerPoint presentation that depicts the highlights of the person’s life, including illustrations, photographs, and a timeline. 

 

Benefits to my students

The benefits to this grant are endless. The students will learn about famous people. They will realize that all people experience achievements, as well as failures in life. Their vocabulary and their reading comprehension will improve as they read and discuss their chosen person. Since these books contain illustrations, sidebars, and timelines, the students will learn about different text features and the importance within the text. My groups will learn how to distinguish between important information and irrelevant information. They will also improve their note taking skills and paraphrasing skills as they create their reports. The students will even learn about PowerPoint if they create a presentation. The presentations will encourage the students to speak clearly and at a good pace, which are important skills for life. As they read and discuss their biographies, each student may find their perfect role model and hopefully, learn that life is a journey filled with many adventures! 

 

Budget Narrative

These sets of biographies will be used for many years by students throughout the school. I believe there will be quite an impact on students due to these books and the discussions they will inspire. Thank you for considering this grant.
