Goal

The goal of this project is to introduce the students in the modified curriculum classrooms to the benefits of gardening by using Earthboxes. This unique growing system allows students to achieve success because it is a low maintenance growing system designed to be easier than traditional in the ground gardens.  

 

What will be done with my students

Each class will be given an Earthbox to tend to. The class will decide what they would like to grow as well as be responsible for maintaining their box. Each individual teacher will determine how to integrate the Earhtboxes into their curriculum based on our Unique curriculum learning goals as well as the abilities and needs of their students. All produce grown will be shared among the classes to promote healthy eating habits.  

 

Benefits to my students

A class garden will offer students hands on and multi-sensory learning opportunities in many different subject areas, including science, math, language arts, and good nutrition. Gardening teaches students plant anatomy, where their food comes from, and how to eat healthy. Class gardens in the special needs classroom can help to improve fine and gross motor skills, encourage communication as well as cooperation among the students. Best of all it makes learning fun.

 

 

Budget Narrative

The money will be used to purchase 6 Earthboxes which will be used each year with all 5 modified curriculum classrooms.
