Goal
The goal of this grant is to encourage, support and help students with intellectual disabilities acquire job skills before entering job training and ultimately the workforce within our community.
What will be done with my students
Students will watch segments of real life scenarios as well as role play and discuss the impacts it might have while working. Topics covered will include: work ethic, workplace manners, learning the job, taking responsibility for mistakes, stealing, and getting your foot in the door. These are all crucial areas that students need to learn prior to gaining or training for employment. After learning about these topics, students will apply their learning in our community at local businesses and learn specific job skills and tasks associated with each business. They will experience a wide range of opportunities to further explore their strengths and weaknesses as well as their interest in job fields.
Benefits to my students
Too often we forget that social skills and personal qualities are as important to holding a job as competence and experience. With this dvd set and in class learning/experiences, students will be better prepared for on the job training within our community. This will encourage discussions and role playing throughout the school year of social skills and job competencies that will allow them to be success and ultimately gain employment.
