Goal

Students in grades 3-5 will have an in-depth understanding of the meaning of fractions by engaging in hands-on experiences with LEGOs.

What will be done with my students

Students will use legos to understanding the meaning of one whole, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 to start. They will build a model to see the different sizes and compare 1/2 of a lego to 1/2 of a piece of paper to understand that the size of a whole makes a huge difference. Students will engage in LEGO challenges that involve building items of different sizes and discussing their size by using fractions.

Benefits to my students

Students consistently struggle to understand that fractions reduce the amount of something. They need a strong foundational understanding of the size of fractions so they can understand harder concepts such as multiplying and dividing fractions. LEGOs are highly engaging and will provide an experience with fractions that students will allow students to connect back to as their learning progresses.

Budget Narrative

This will buy 9 LEGO kits which will allow every teacher in a grade level to have a set during their fraction unit.
