Goal

By providing students with their own issue of Scope magazine, it is our goal to facilitate an appreciation for civic engagement by staying up to date on current events, while also supporting their abilities in discerning credible news.  

 

What will be done with my students

Articles in Scope issues will be utilized within class as a means of textual analysis to build close reading skills, research and writing skills, and speaking and listening skills when students engage in discussions on topics covered in the articles. Scope articles will be assigned for homework and students will present their findings every week to engage in inquiry-based discussions about their readings. 

 

Benefits to my students

Because students will have access to Scope, they will have the ability to engage in real-world analysis of news coverage and media reports, on a student-friendly level. This will inevitable prepare them to be civically engaged and productive members of society. On a smaller scale, this will support students in their critical thinking standards, research and writing skills, as well as their speaking and listening skills for Florida education standards for learning.  

 

Budget Narrative

This subscription amount will allow students to each have their own subscription to scope magazine for the year. Each subscription is $9.99. For 91 students in 6th and 7th grade Cambridge, this would amount to $909.01 plus $90.91 for shipping and handling.
