Goal

To challenge Kindergarten children to apply what they are learning through growth mindset stories into life application experiences. Young children naturally have a growth mindset before entering Kindergarten. A growth mindset is a way of thinking that allows the children to dream and believe that anything is possible and they can achieve anything they set their mind to. As students begin to be challenged by higher Kindergarten standards and expectations, they often become discouraged and tend to give up easily. Our goal to teach our students the power of changing our mindset from "I can't" to "I can" through the use of growth mindset stories and hands on challenges that will push them to adjust their thinking and team work skills as they conquer each new challenge. 

 

What will be done with my students

Using the books we received from our grant last year, our Kindergarten team plans weekly growth mindset lessons throughout the school year. Through these books our students learn about how their brain works and ways to problem solve challenges rather than giving up. As a Kindergarten team we will create nine growth mindset buckets and rotate them each week as part of our growth mindset lessons. Each week students will be given a challenge using the materials in the bucket. The challenge will include a focus on the growth mindset story covered. Students will be working in teams and will learn how to share ideas on how to best solve the challenge that is presented.

This grant also includes a request for five more growth mindset books that we feel will be a great addition to the books purchased last year. 

 

Benefits to my students

These books and buckets will be used year after year in each of the nine Kindergarten classrooms at Laurel Oak. The number of children impacted this year alone will be 150 students. Nurturing a growth mindset in our Kindergarten classrooms will give our children the tools and skills necessary to accomplish any challenge. We witnessed a mindset change in our students last year and saw them become problem solvers, encouragers, and champions for themselves and others. They will take ownership of their learning and persevere when faced with new growth opportunities. 

 

Budget Narrative

There are nine challenges listed above that will be put into a plastic container. This will allow teachers to keep the materials protected as we rotate them weekly. There are also five additional growth mindset books that our students would benefit from.
