Goal

The goal in utilizing TIME for Kids magazines is to expose students to age-appropriate, unbiased journalism. Each magazine has a series of non-fiction articles that engage students in what is happening in the world around them. In utilizing these magazines in the classroom, our hope is to broaden our students' background knowledge on age-appropriate current events. 

 

What will be done with my students

The TIME for Kids magazines can be used in a variety of ways. Articles can be used during reading for their non-fiction qualities. Students can use the articles, pictures, graphs, etc. to study text structure and text features. The magazines can also be used in science and social studies to front load students with information about specific topics. The magazines will be used to develop debates on topics students are passionate about as well as give students the opportunity to see the world from their own classroom.  

 

Benefits to my students

The benefits of using TIME for Kids in the classroom are astronomical. Students' knowledge of current events around the world will broaden. Each student will receive their own magazine weekly, and each copy can be used to spark conversations among peers, teachers, and family members. The non-fiction articles within the magazines can be used within the classroom to practice a skill (i.e. finding the main idea of a paragraph, inferring about a topic or opinion, etc.) Students can benefit from these magazines from a social aspect to an intellectual one.  

 

Budget Narrative

A subscription to the TIME for Kids magazine is $4.95 per student. For a classroom of 30 students, $148.50 is needed to accommodate the cost of each student receiving their own magazine.
