Champions For Learning - $1,214.00
Goal
To equip 9th graders with academic and personal success skills through the study of their own cultures and the challenges that others have overcome. Along the way, students will hone several SEL skills.
What will be done with my students
Students will practice growth mindset skills.
Students will explore and write about their own family histories.
Students will explore and write about others who have overcome obstacles to accomplish their goals.
Students will develop a presentation that will bring their individual cultures to life: customs, lineage, and legacy.
Students will read and discuss their similarities and differences through Socratic Seminar.
Students will present their boards in class and at a school-based Cultural Expo
Benefits to my students
The benefits are numerous:
1. Expanding vocabulary.
2. Developing writing/research skills.
3. Exploring family history through family interviews.
4. Embracing who they are as individuals, realizing that obstacles can be overcome and goals can be reached.
5. Practicing good time management.
6. Practicing good communication/presentation skills.
7. Learning about internal bias/perceptions.
8. Accepting those who may be different, but have the same goals and dreams.
Budget Narrative
The first item is a reader/writer text that presents different stories from a variety of cultures and stations in life. Each story includes vocabulary enrichment, short answer, paragraph writing activities, and essay ideas. The text is organized thematic and one or two short stories from each unit will be studied. This price is for a single, class set rather than individual copies. I already have the Teacher's Edition. The tri-fold boards are for the students' cultural presentations. The motivational poster pack is to reinforce the students' possibilities and the SEL lessons along the way. The collection of international flags is to hang in the room during the course of the unit.
