Goal

My first goal for this rocketry project is to allow my students to display their understanding of force and motion concepts using real world models. My second goal is more social/ emotional, focused on helping my students understand the benefits of perseverance and grit. 

 

What will be done with my students

This unit begins with a student viewing of the movie “October Sky” (about a disadvantaged group of boys who overcame many challenges to build a rocket and win the state science fair). Students will reflect on times they have displayed perseverance and/or GRIT in the past and when they might need to in the future.

The next step will be for students to apply the different aspects of STEAM as they craft unique scientific investigations using the concepts that we have learned in class.Finally, students will construct their rockets and test their hypothesis on launch day. Prior to launch, students can also employ the A in STEAM by decorating their rockets to their liking. On launch day, students will gather data and take a variety of measurements to analyze and discuss the flight results. 

 

Benefits to my students

One hundred fifty students will benefit from participating in this project by gaining an opportunity to solve real world problems, that space agencies may actually encounter. by designing a unique scientific investigation. Students will also benefit by understanding that hard work, perseverance and grit can help them reach their goals for the future.

 

 

Budget Narrative

The students will be working in groups of 2 or 3. Each group will receive one rocket kit and an Estes engine.
