Goal
Did you know that an adult oyster can filter 50 gallons of seawater per day? With rising pollution levels in the Choctawhatchee Bay and a near extinct oyster population, raising and releasing baby oysters into the Choctawhatchee Bay can help a precious ecosystem.
The goal for this grant will be fund a cooperative project with the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance for the construction of oyster beds in the Choctawhatchee Bay and the release of young oysters on established oyster beds
What will be done with my students
Environmental science students will work with the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance to engineer and place oyster beds in the Choctawhatchee Bay. Student will grown young oysters in their classroom and maintain water quality in the grow out tanks. Students will then field trip to local oyster beds for the release of the young oysters
Benefits to my students
Students will learn the importance of good water quality in the Choctawhatchee Bay. Students will also learn how nature can help solve man-made pollution issues in their local environment. Students will also learn how environmental engineering can solve community environmental problems
Budget Narrative
The bulk of funding will be used for the establishment and maintenance of marine aquariums in the classroom. Because of the uniqueness of a marine aquarium, specialized lighting, filtration, and feeding equipment will be needed
