Goal

To continue to purchase nursing pins for each student that graduates from the high school nursing program.

What will be done with my students

Each year, just before high school graduation, I have a pinning ceremony for the 50 graduating High School Practical Nursing students. In years past, I have used money from my Golden Apple award to fund. However, those funds have now been exhausted. A nurse receiving a pin upon graduation is a long standing tradition for nurses and I would like it to continue for my students.

Benefits to my students

The history of the nursing pin can be traced back to the crusaders. However, most people think of Florence Nightingale, the lady with the lamp, from the late 1800's. Florence was awarded a brooch/medal from the Queen of England for her ardent devotion and caring nature towards the soldiers. Later, Florence opened a nursing school and awarded newly graduated nurses a gold/silver pin to represent the same passion for the profession.

The pin represents the transition from a nursing student into the professional practice of healing. I still have my pin, and wear it each year for my students pinning ceremony.

Students are made aware of the importance of this pin and what it represents. This is a tradition that should continue for all of my students.

Budget Narrative

Each pin is approximately $20. The Nursing Club raises money all year to buy the food and decorations for the ceremony. The pins I have always bought myself.
