Goal
As part of developing an alternative fueled vehicle curriculum for the state, we have decided to re-enter the world of Electrathon racing. We would like to build our own vehicle to participate that would be similar to the building/engineering of an electric automobile.
What will be done with my students
Basically a STEM project, the students will gain a better understanding of the science behind batteries and electrical systems, the technology that goes into battery management for electric vehicles, the engineering of a chassis designed for endurance as well as handling, and the mathematics for meeting all the specifications of the build as well as the calculations for determining how best to balance speed with voltage consumption. Hopefully it will peak some interest into a career in automobile engineering for some of the students.
Benefits to my students
As opposed to working with a loaner platform that has already been built the students should learn from their mistakes of building/engineering through trial and error. I believe those students who are dedicated and engaged in the program will discover the advantages as well as disadvantages of current electric vehicle design and maybe discover a better way of doing things.
Budget Narrative
Each Electrathon vehicle requires 4 batteries per race day - 2 for the first race and 2 for the second race. As there is only 2 hours in between races there is not time to fully charge them.
