Goal

The Elephant & Piggie series of books by author/illustrator Mo Willems tackles social emotional learning and character education topics in a light-hearted, kid-friendly manner using characters who are engaging and entertaining. My goal is to use this book series to address topics which will empower my students to demonstrate outstanding character and problem-solving skills. 

 

What will be done with my students

I will use this book series to address relevant topics of social-emotional learning and character education.
Students will listen to and discuss the characters, problems, and solutions. We will relate the situations which the characters of Elephant and Piggie face to real-life Kindergarten issues. Students may also draw and write about the characters and what they have learned as well as use drama (such as Readers' Theatre) to act out the situations/topics addressed in the stories. 

 

Benefits to my students

Students will be able to easily relate to these fun and engaging characters. While enjoying the stories and their humor, they will also develop an understanding of what it means to demonstrate good character and learn practical ways to be a good friend.
