Maneuvering successfully through geometry and chemistry topics is challenging for students. Students need a way to organize and process their thinking of these new concepts. Our goal is to create an opportunity for Lorenzo Walker Technical High School students to deepen their understanding of chemistry and geometry and hone their problem-solving skills by demonstrating their learning and thought processes with the aid of 21st-century technology. Providing our students with the graphic drawing tablets will allow them to become proficient with problem-solving skills, communication of logical arguments and complex processes, and collaboration with peers and teachers.

Goal

Maneuvering successfully through geometry and chemistry topics is challenging for students. Students need a way to organize and process their thinking of these new concepts. Our goal is to create an opportunity for Lorenzo Walker Technical High School students to deepen their understanding of chemistry and geometry and hone their problem-solving skills by demonstrating their learning and thought processes with the aid of 21st-century technology. Providing our students with the graphic drawing tablets will allow them to become proficient with problem-solving skills, communication of logical arguments and complex processes, and collaboration with peers and teachers.  

 

What will be done with my students

Our students will learn to use graphic draw tablets in chemistry and geometry classes and collaborate with their peers to solve complex scientific and geometric problems. Through the use of graphic drawing tablets, our students’ laptops will essentially be transformed into touch screen computers and allow them to digitally communicate the processes they are using to solve problems, revise their thinking, and process critical content in a logical and sequential way. Students will utilize the graphic drawing tablets on a variety of activities, including activating prior knowledge, processing critical content, and complex performance-based tasks. We would like two class sets (sixty) of drawing tablets to share between chemistry and geometry, allowing the benefits of the graphic drawing tablets to carry over into both learning environments. In addition, these graphic drawing tablets will enable students to maximize the use of their district-issued devices.  

 

Benefits to my students

Digital inking has many benefits for students. Students can quickly and easily demonstrate their mastery of critical skills and communicate their thinking with others. Digital inking allows students to communicate with more options than a traditional keyboard effectively. Digital inking and the ability to communicate thinking with others are skills that will contribute to our students being college and career-ready upon graduation. Subjects such as chemistry and geometry are heavily laden with symbols. Digital inking makes these subjects more accessible to students than a traditional keyboard by allowing students to freely utilize diagrams and annotations. Additionally, in accordance with findings published in Psychological Science(1), taking notes by hand can result in better fact retention and long-term comprehension by students.
