Goal

Provide students with the tools to graph functions and geometric figures in the classroom for hands-on practice to increase understanding as well as receive immediate, timely feedback

What will be done with my students

Graphing is an abstract concept to many students and having these white boards in hand will "bring graphing to life." These graphing white boards with printed x- and y-axes on one side will aid Geometry (primarily Grades (9 & 10) and Algebra 2 (primarily Grades 10 & 11) students in learning to graph geometric shapes and a variety of functions in the coordinate plane. Doing is learning. Many students struggle with graphing because they must watch their teacher or a video, then go home with uncertainty. Giving students the ability to practice graphing in-class where they can receive direct, immediate feedback--drawing graphs and erasing to make corrections--will contribute to greater mastery.

Benefits to my students

Raise the mastery level of Geometry students with regard to drawing geometric shapes and practicing transformation of those shapes, i.e. translation, rotation, reflection and dilation, a topic that is heavily weighted on district and state exams.

Raise the mastery level of Algebra 2 students with regard to plotting or sketching graphs for functions of higher degree than linear functions, i.e. quadratic, polynomial, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric functions, thereby increasing their understanding of advanced functions in the coordinate plane

Budget Narrative

4-12 pks of white boards including erasers (total of 48 whiteboards. Classes up to 40 students). 2-36 pks of black dry erase markers (would be most used; should get through entire year). 5-8 pks of assorted color dry erase markers. 2 3-pk sets of 50 dry erase wipes for cleaning. 4-pk of clear stackable storage containers for easy storage and organization. All items purchased from Amazon. Estimated Amazon shipping would apply only if unable to use personal Amazon Prime account with district tax-exempt status.
