Goal

Design, calculate and construct furniture for small groups and outdoor seating

What will be done with my students

This is a 2-3 month project that coincides with our units on measurement, conversions, shapes and volume, energy and force. Students will design 2D scale models of their furniture on grid paper and isometric dot paper. Next, they will use the engineering design process in order to make changes and improvements before finalizing their blueprint. Final blueprints will include all measurements (lengths, widths, heights and volume) of all composite pieces.
Then they will begin measuring and cutting parts of the furniture (legs, seats, etc.)
Composite pieces are assembled and prepared for painting/sealing. (Explore surface area and chemical changes)
Finally, the furniture is placed and arranged to create an outdoor small group learning environment.

Benefits to my students

Students will explore several math and science standards including volume of 3D composite shapes, surface area, ratios, scaling and conversions. This project includes rigorous yet practical mathematics which highlights a real-world connection to the standards learned in class. Additionally, students will work in role-based teams to complete tasks such as drawing, measuring, cutting, painting and woodworking. The completed furniture can be used by all classes and grade levels for outdoor events or small group activities. This project was completed last year and contributed to a noticeable increase in engagement and mastery of several math standards. This was evidenced by growth on STAR Math tests and FSA performance.
