Goal
My goal is to establish a positive learning environment through weekly raffles. This will generate a successful classroom culture for my students.
What will be done with my students
I have held weekly raffles in my classroom for all 8 years of my teaching career. It consistently has a profound impact on the amount of buy-in from my students as well as creating a climate of inclusivity.
Students will receive weekly raffle tickets for:
-Standard Mastery
-Positive Behavior
-Exceptional Participation
-Displaying Kindness
-Performing Voluntary Classroom Duties
Every Friday (or last day before the weekend) students submit their tickets with their names on the back of them into the drawing bucket. I typically draw 5 names per class. As an ELA teacher, I have 3 blocked classes which sums to 15 prizes a week.
A typical prize box consists of a variety of single serving chips, cookies, candy, toys, school supplies, and an assortment of other foods and trinkets.
Additionally, I often use my prize bin as a pantry if students are hungry or are having a rough day.
Over the years, I have always funded this myself. The frequency of this activity begins to amount to an increasingly large amount of money. I have always continued to do it anyway because of the joy that it provides my students. Anything that could be given would be greatly appreciated.
Benefits to my students
The prizes I give to my students may seem small, but the benefits are substantial:
- Teacher/Student Connections
- Positive Classroom Culture
- Increased Achievement
- Accountability
- Socialization
- Encouraging Participation
- FUN!
Budget Narrative
This weekly raffle consists of 5 students winning a prize. Typically students are drawn to the snack prizes. This requires me to purchase varieties of snacks every week to be ready for demand.
I chose the Frito Lay Fiery Mix because my students love spicy snacks.
My students also enjoy a mix of sweet and sour treats which is why I would like the chocolate and the sour candy boxes.
My students generally prefer mechanical pencils and they are not always available. (Also they are #2 so no issues on test day)
The erasers are for fun and to add color to the prize bin. Additionally, the students love to have zany school supplies.
I also require tickets for the drawing and the prize box to hold the items. I chose a Harry Potter prize box because my classroom theme and incentive system is built around it.
Thank you for your consideration; any support is appreciated! :)
