Goal

In third grade, students study plants. They learn about photosynthesis, life cycles of plants and the identification of plant parts. This grant will enhance the science curriculum and help students to understand everything they need to know about plants.

What will be done with my students

Two classes will use these planters to plant, water and observe the growth of different plants. They will plant sweet potatoes, peanuts and carrots. The flaps on the containers will enable the students to see the roots grow and produce. Students will then be in charge of harvesting when ready. The students will truly be able to understand this part of the science curriculum through hard work, fun and observation. Understanding and comprehension is always enhanced by hands on learning. This is an amazing opportunity for deep understanding.

Benefits to my students

Students will work in the garden each day (planting and watering). They will monitor the progress of the plants. It will also be available to all students at VME to observe and learn from this process. This project could benefit over 700 students!

Budget Narrative

Each class will have 3 planters, 3 bags of soil and one watering can. Six planters are $38.00, six large bags of soil are $120. Two watering cans are $36.00.
