Goal

My goal is to help deepen my student's mathematical understanding and reasoning with hands on math manipulatives.  

 

What will be done with my students

I am very lucky to teach math all day to every 4th grader at Heritage Elementary. I noticed last year that many students needed additional support with abstract concepts such as fractions and decimals, place value, and measuring with different units of measurement. The math manipulatives I am requesting with this grant will help my students make these abstract math concepts concrete through visual representation and hands-on exploration. Math is no longer "just a number" since manipulatives help to create meaning for students and allows for deeper thinking, understanding, and reasoning to occur within the classroom.  

 

Benefits to my students

With using these manipulatives in my daily instruction, I hope that my students will gain confidence and courage in math to continue learning and applying the mathematical concepts taught in class to the real world.

I also expect to increase student achievement in math scores in the areas of fractions, measurement, and number sense and operations on student math assessments given four times throughout the year.
